Just within the immediate outlying areas of Seattle, yet far enough away to be considered a “rural” area, Shoreline, Washington is a hub for natural beauty and abundant resources, which the 53,000 residents of this region regularly enjoy.

The earliest records of Shoreline recount how Native Americans traveled along gathering plants and setting controlled fires in order to clear the land, creating meadows in which they were able to cultivate certain wild plants and provide open spaces for small game. Not too far into the future, railroad fever gripped this area and the arrival of the Great Northern Railroad in 1891 sparked the growth of the local, small town and increased the pace of development in the wooded uplands. Construction of the Seattle-Everett Interurban line through Shoreline in 1906 helped to create an easier path of travel for those moving to and from Shoreline, thus increasing suburban growth. This trend continued during the early twentieth century, as large groups of people moved in the area, drawn to the rural, yet accessible location.

Throughout the many years that followed, Shoreline became a flourishing location. In 1944, the name “Shoreline” was officially used for the first time to describe the school district after being coined by one of its students. It finally became a city in 1995, joining King County.

Being from the King County/ Seattle area, it’s no surprise that the weather is not always accommodating; however, this does not mean that it is not worth enduring. On average, the temperature in January ranges between 33.1-45.6 degrees F, while in July it ranges from 51.9-76.1 degree F. This, paired with the average annual rainfall of 38.6 inches, and an average annual snowfall of 4.3 inches creates an environment that some might see as “moody”, while others see this as a pleasant perk of living within the Pacific Northwest!

Today, the City of Shoreline is the recipient of many awards and accolades, including a “Municipal Excellence Award” for their shared police command model and a “Green Globe Award” acknowledging Shoreline as a leader in the reduction of pesticides!
